How to run an Instagram giveaway

Running an Instagram giveaway boosts engagement and grows your profile — but it has to be fair and transparent. In this guide you'll learn how to pick a winner from the comments of a post or Reel, randomly and auditably, and even reveal the result in a ready-to-post video. No spreadsheets, no hassle.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Paste the post link

Copy your Instagram post or Reel link and paste it into AzuraSort. It loads the preview and the comment count.

  2. 2

    Choose the entry base

Decide whether to draw from people who commented or who liked the post.

  3. 3

    Choose the reveal animation

Pick how the winner is revealed — vault, countdown or Matrix — and go live if you want.

  4. 4

    Run the draw

AzuraSort shuffles entries with a deterministic algorithm (Fisher-Yates + SHA-256) and reveals the winner.

  5. 5

    Share with proof

Download the reveal video and share the certificate page, where anyone can verify the result was fair.

Before you start: what Instagram expects from you

Instagram allows giveaways, but it puts the responsibility on whoever runs them. Meta's promotion guidelines ask for three things in practice: say clearly that the giveaway is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram; publish the rules and eligibility; and don't ask people to tag content inaccurately — for example tagging themselves in a photo they are not in.

Write the rules in the caption, not only in your Stories, where they disappear after 24 hours. A good caption answers five questions: who can enter, what counts as an entry, when entries close, when the winner will be announced, and how long the winner has to reply.

Sweepstakes and prize promotions are regulated differently in each country — some require registration, some forbid asking for a purchase, some set age limits. If your giveaway involves a purchase, a paid sign-up or a valuable prize, check with a local lawyer or accountant first. This guide covers the mechanics of the draw, not legal advice.

Writing the rules: a template you can copy

Most disputes after a giveaway come from a rule that was never written down. Decide these points before you publish: whether each comment counts as one entry or each person counts once; whether tagging friends is required and how many; whether the person must follow your account; and whether accounts created after the post are excluded.

A simple template: "🎁 GIVEAWAY — To enter: 1) follow @yourbrand, 2) comment tagging one friend (each comment = one entry, max. 3 per person). Entries close on [date] at [time, time zone]. The winner will be picked at random among valid comments and announced on [date]. The winner has 48 hours to reply by DM; otherwise a backup winner is chosen. Open to [country/age]. This promotion is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram."

If you want help filling it in, the free giveaway rules generator in our tools section builds this text from your answers.

How to pick a random winner on Instagram

There are three common ways. The first is by hand: scroll the comments, copy every username into a list and use a random number. It works for a few dozen entries but breaks quickly — Instagram loads comments in pages, replies are nested, and it is easy to skip someone without noticing.

The second is a free picker where you paste the list yourself. It costs nothing and the draw is random; the work is collecting the list, and for big posts that takes time.

The third is a tool that reads the comments from the post link. With AzuraSort you paste the link of a public post or Reel, choose whether to draw from comments or likes, apply the filters that match your rules (duplicate comments, required mentions or hashtags) and pick how many winners and backups you want. The shuffle uses the Fisher-Yates algorithm, and each draw gets a public verification page where anyone can re-run it with the same data and get the same winner.

Whatever method you use, pick the backups in the same draw, in order. Running a second draw later because the first winner didn't reply invites the question "why did they pick again?". A list of backups announced together with the winner answers it in advance.

The part most giveaways skip: proving it was fair

Followers rarely doubt the prize; they doubt the draw. A screenshot of a name on a screen proves very little — anyone can edit a list before pressing the button. What builds trust is something the audience can check without trusting you.

That is why every AzuraSort draw ends with a public certificate: the participant list is fingerprinted with SHA-256, the shuffle is reproducible, and the verification page lets anyone run it again. You share one link in the announcement, and the question "was it rigged?" has an answer that doesn't depend on your word.

A short reveal video helps too. Posting the moment the winner appears — a countdown, a vault opening — turns the result into content your audience actually watches, instead of a text post that gets scrolled past.

Mistakes that make followers suspicious

Changing the rules after the giveaway starts, even to be more generous. Announcing the winner days late without explanation. Picking a winner who is a friend, an employee or an account created the day before. Deleting comments from people who complained. Running the draw privately and only posting the name.

Each of these has the same fix: decide everything before publishing, write it in the caption, and show the draw instead of only telling the result.

After the draw: announcing the winner

Announce in the same place where people entered — a comment pinned on the original post works, plus a Story with the reveal video. Tag the winner, repeat the deadline to reply and say who the backups are.

Contact the winner by DM from your official account and never ask for passwords, card details or payment to release a prize: scammers copy giveaway accounts precisely to do that, and saying it publicly protects your audience.

Keep the verification link and the list of entries for a while. If someone questions the result weeks later, you can show exactly what happened.

Frequently asked questions

Is the draw fair and auditable?

Yes. The participant list and the draw seed are fingerprinted with SHA-256 and shuffled with the Fisher-Yates algorithm. The public certificate page shows that data and re-runs the draw, so anyone can confirm the same winner comes out.

Can I draw from a post's comments?

Yes. Just paste the post or Reel link and AzuraSort collects the comments for the draw.

Can I have multiple winners and backups?

Yes. You choose how many winners and backups; each winner is a distinct person.

Does it work with Reels?

Yes, it works with both Instagram posts and Reels.

How do I verify the result was fair?

Each draw generates a certificate with a public code. On the verification page the algorithm is reproduced from the revealed seed and participants, proving nobody tampered with the result.

How much does it cost?

It is pay-per-draw, with no subscription. For up to 500 participants a draw costs $5.40 (Standard), $8.50 (Premium, with the reveal video) or $12.60 (VIP, with Live mode), card fee included. Bigger posts cost more; the pricing page has the full table and you always see the amount before paying.

Can I run a giveaway for free?

Yes, if you paste the list of participants yourself: the free draw page picks a random winner at no cost and without sign-up. The paid draw reads the comments from the post link for you and adds the verification page and the video.

Can I exclude duplicate comments or require a tag?

Yes. Before drawing you can count each person only once, require a minimum number of mentions or a hashtag, so the draw follows the rules you published.
